The Voice – S3 – Battle Round #1
The Steal! One simple change to the rules, and now The Voice has stepped into high gear. The Battle rounds were already a very exciting stage of The Voice, but allowing each coach to pick two losers from a performing team has made it that much more exciting.
Team Blake started the night:
Casey Muessigmann vs. Terry McDermott
Song: “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas
Winner: Terry McDermott
Terry was comfortable, and sounded like he had done this before. Terry’s classic tone of voice was really impressive by how he showcased every aspect of his voice from breathy, to grit with full control. Terry has just moved high on my list of singers to keep an eye on. Casey was good, but not great enough to defeat Terry. The decision was clear for Blake.
Team Adam:
Bryan Keith vs. Collin McLoughlin
Song: “Santeria” by Sublime
Winner: Bryan Keith
Not sure what Adam was doing by picking this song, but he’s the coach. Bryan struggled with the song during rehearsals, but his voice ended up fitting better than Collin’s. Collin didn’t seem comfortable singing the song, but sounded strong.
The first steal was committed by Blake. Both Cee Lo & Blake pushed their button but Cee Lo made a mistake by saying Bryan had the better performance.
Collin chose Team Blake
Team Cee Lo
J.R. Aquino vs. Diego Val
Song: “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield
Winner: Diego Val
Interesting polar opposites, but what it came down to was who would take the chances and push the envelope. Diego struggled to learn the song, but JR just sang it as straightforward as possible.
Diego knowing he had nothing to lose went for it, not the best of singers, but made the song his own. JR conformed to the original version, Diego didn’t. No coaches took attempted to steal JR.
Team Xtina
De’borah vs. Nelly’s Echo
Song: “Message in a Bottle” by The Police
Winner: De’borah
Great pairing, and a great opportunity to steal a good singer. De’borah grew up with gospel music, so pop music is a little difficult for her. But she stepped up, and stayed on point.
I was very surprised that no one stole Nelly’s Echo. He did good and might of been a good addition to a team. But it didn’t happen.
Team Blake
2Steel Girls vs. Gracia Harrison
Song: “Sin Wagon” by Dixie Chicks
Winner: Gracia Harrison
Duos are tough to include in the competition. They made it work, but it only made Gracia look better. When you’re singing in a duo you are focusing on your partner, making sure you’re on. Gracia just had to sound strong, and confident. She did.
Team Cee Lo
Trevin Hunte vs. Amanda Brown
Song: “Vision of Love” by Mariah Carey
Winner: Trevin Hunte
Cee Lo made a mistake. Dammmmm… And he knew it. Cee Lo put two of his best singers battling each other. Trevin did very well, but in my opinion, had shaky moments. Amanda nailed it, a difficult decision that had Cee Lo questioning his choice.
Cee Lo chose Trevin, but Adam had already declared to steal the loser. All 3 coaches wanted the steal, but Adam was the winner.
