Last Friday marked the 49th anniversary of one of my favorite shows, Doctor Who! The show first started on November 23rd, 1963 and has since then become the longest running science fiction show on television.
In honor of this great accomplishment for Doctor Who, we over here at Z!ng decided to compile a list of our favorite longest running TV shows. The majority of our favorites have been on the air for at least 10 years and you’ve probably been a fan of at least one of them! So here they are in no particularly order:
SpongeBob has been on the air for 13 years and has the honor of being The Longest Nickelodeon Animated Series. SpongeBob is also 15 on IGN’s list of Top 100 Animated Series. Let’s hope that Nick keeps producing more episodes so we can see more adventures with SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy and the rest of their pals down in Bikini Bottom!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series began in 1987 and lasted until 1996. It became one of the most well known animated series in TV history. Besides just that it aided in making the characters really mainstream – the majority of people I know have at least heard of my favorite pizza-loving reptilian heroes.
The beginning of every South Park episode always opens with a disclaimer about how ”due to its content it should not be viewed by anyone.” However I don’t think that stops South Park fans since it has been running for 15 years. Clearly many people out there enjoy the satirical and dark humor of the show since South Park will have at least 20 seasons written and directed its creators!
Friends was on the air for 10 awesome seasons and is one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. The series aired 236 episodes and it’s final episode broke records! The series finale was the most watched episode of the decade with 52.5 million viewers tuning in to see it. Because of it’s popularity that last episode hit number four on the list of Top 10 Most Watched Series Finales, ranking behind M*A*S*H, Cheers, and Seinfeld. If you’re ever missing Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross don’t fret: all 10 seasons are on DVD for your enjoyment!
Dexter is one of my favorite shows currently on television and I know I’ll be a bit upset next year when the eighth and last season comes around. However it’s easy to see that the writers of Dexter are trying to tie up loose ends as the seventh season progresses. After all, they’re bringing us back to season 2 by making this season revolve around LaGuerta’s theories on the Bay Harbor Butcher case. And Dexter fans can always get more of their favorite serial killer by reading the book series that inspired the show!
